Cover reveal: William Hope Hodgson’s The House on the Borderland and Other Mysterious Places!

We’ve got another cover reveal for you, everyone! Today—just over 140 years after the birth of the author—we’re showing off the jacket for Volume Two in the Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson: The House on the Borderland and Other Mysterious Places, which collects Hodgson’s mystery and suspense fiction, including those starring the occult detective Thomas Carnacki, and the titular novel The House on the Borderland, a seminal and influential work of early weird fiction.

(And, just because we think it’s cool, we should mention this: in reference to The House on the Borderland, the late, great Terry Pratchett said “This is where the screaming really starts.” That’s quite a recommendation, as far as we’re concerned!)

Read on to check out the jacket, a brief summary of our updated plans for the series, and a couple interesting images from past editions of this famous work.

As we explained before the re-release of Volume One:

Between 2005 and 2007, Night Shade published a five-volume hardcover set collecting all of early twentieth century fantasist William Hope Hodgson’s novels and short fiction. It was a popular release, and some of the volumes eventually sold out of their printings, fetching high resell prices from readers and collectors.

We get lots of email inquiries here at Night Shade, but near the top of the list of commonly-asked questions is: “Are you ever going to reprint the Hodgson books?”

Well, the answer is now YES: Following up on the well-received paperback reissues of our Clark Ashton Smith series, we’re following suit with Hodgson, and reissuing all five volumes in trade paperback format.

The new series began in September 2017 with The Boats of the “Glen Carrig” and Other Nautical Adventures, featuring a revamped series design from Claudia Noble, based on the original hardcover artwork from Jason Van Hollander. Volume Two comes out January 9th, 2018, with a new volume scheduled to publish every four months after, starting with Volume Three, The Ghost Pirates and Other Revenants of the Sea, in May 2018. Check back here soon for the cover reveal!

First, here’s the silver-foil and blue-leather cover we used for our hardcover edition—thanks again to Jason Van Hollander for the great artwork.

And here are several other covers from various editions of the novel. You can tell, even just from these, what an unusual, hard-to-categorize book this was:

Pretty weird, right? After all, how can one book lead to such different covers? (And this wasn’t even close to all of them.)

Well, you’ll have to read it to find out.
