Dave Duncan: The Passing of a Legend

Well, Night Shade website readers, today we’re bringing you sad news: Dave Duncan, legendary author of fantasy and science fiction, including our own Enchanter General series (Ironfoot and Trial by Treason), has passed away. He was 85.

A two-time Aurora Award-winner and a member of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, it’s hard to overstate how successful and prolific Dave was; just take a look at this list of all his books. Rising to prominence in the late 1980s, his many acclaimed and beloved fantasy series include The King’s Blades, The Seventh Sword, and A Man of His Word.

Here at Night Shade, we had only started working with Dave in the last few years, but even so, his smart and clever writing, addictively-adventurous narratives, and kind personality made an immediate and indelible impression on us. Dave was able to see the publication of two of the three Enchanter General books, Ironfoot in 2017, and Trial by Treason, which was released earlier this month, and—ever the professional—he had turned in the finished manuscript for the third and final book in the trilogy, Merlin Redux, well ahead of schedule. Our plan is to publish it, on-time, in Fall 2019.

But for now, our thoughts are with Dave’s family and friends. We hope they know just how many lives he touched through his writing.
