About Us
Founded by Jason Williams in 1997, Night Shade Books has been publishing science fiction, fantasy and horror for over a decade. Shortly after its founding, Jeremy Lassen (who had been fiddling around with his own publishing efforts) came on board as a partner, and the two “J”s have been roaring forward ever since.
Nearly fifteen years, and more than two hundred books later, and Night Shade Books has become a significant publisher of genre fiction. We have grown to an official team of Six, operating out of an industrial, but somehow charming, warehouse in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood. With the help of an essential and dedicated posse of contracted editors, artists, and designers, we publish between three and five books a month.
Books published by Night Shade are routinely well-reviewed by trade and online venues and are frequently nominated for—and occasionally winning—major industry awards, including the Shirley Jackson, Stoker, World Fantasy, Nebula, and Hugo awards. We are proud to have published some of the most renowned and critically acclaimed names in genre fiction and just as proud to be the place where many new authors have found their start.
In 2010 Night Shade Books began a concentrated effort to build on a fundamental we have always believed in, to provide a space for new voices and authors in genre fiction. Our aggressive schedule of debut novels, along with our original anthology series Eclipse has resulted in great success that we believe reflects readers’ thirst for new voices in genre fiction. We will continue to keep our finger on the pulse of the genre community with the strong belief that today’s new authors are the great authors of the future.
Night Shade’s titles are distributed nationally by Diamond Book Distribution, and are available from wholesalers and better bookstores throughout North America. Some of Night Shade’s titles are available in the UK, via normal book distribution channels.
