This thread continues exactly as before. Free Nemo 5 (by surface mail) for ANY post on this thread. Free ZENCORE for killing the thread by a timely simple short or long post in accordance with the original rules. The ZENCORE prize will be sent by AIR MAIL. Two days now, Swen. You are coming very close to being ranked among my worst dozen dining experiencees. What's the trouble? Do you have to grow the wheat from scratch? And you've officially lost your tip, buddy. If I don't see some chop-chop soon, you may lose more. I may be forced to have a talk with the manager. |

des, I have a practical (and tactical) question. Can the winner of this thread's competion also win the critique-writing competion? Or is it one Zencore per individual poster? The fine print doesn't seem to address this. Thanks. Best wishes, Phil |

My guess is there's not too likely to be a winner on this thread unless Nightshade's has a glitch or something where the forum is down for a day or more, making the last person to post before the glitch, the winner. |

Anyone is eligible to win two Zencores (or even three, if you take into account the Shocklines thread), as long as such a winner gives the extra ones to friends or contacts who are likely (but not necessarily guaranteed) to enjoy it and comment on it somewhere. |

Thanks, des. I've got this internet competition bunion which is throbbing. It can't predict rain, but it can predict the return of Nick, Colleen, and Swen. Byron's return goes without saying (or throbbing, thank goodness). |

Moi? Sans throbbing? I'm hurt. Sniff...I thought I was having some kind of impact even if it's only on a competition bunion. I mean, I've already won two contests and yet the competition bunyon doesn't register me as a threat. I'm mortified and I'm just going to have to prove the competition bunyon wrong. |

"Mr. Bailey, perhaps you should consider a career change. You seem to understand the needs of restaurant patrons. I think you would make an excellent waiter. Three wags of the tail, garcon..." Swen, my wayward waiter, I do know the needs all to well of the restaurant patrons, having worked in the back of a kitchen and seen things that would turn the hair on the palm of your hand gray. There are horrors there that are best not mentioned. Greater than any of the horrors in the kitchen, though, are the horrors that are the restaurant patrons, monsters for the modern era more diabolical than any vampire, werewolf, or shambling thing, for out in the dining room lurks the terrible soup fiend and the soul-stealing cottage cheese questioner. The kitchen staff can never expect mercy from them, but I have said too much already. "I hope you have as much spunk as Byron. He make this thread worth the stop." Now that's cruel, Colleen, to inform me that my very own efforts may just be preventing me from winning. With a little spunk, I shall carry on, though. |

Did I say the suspense was killing me? I'm feeling a little better now. The persica did the trick. I'm glad I wasn't dining at the restaurant mentioned above, though. That might have finished me. Not that the rest of you would have been worried by that, since the aim is to survive simply by indulging in a verbal diarrhoea. "I hope you have as much spunk as Byron." Well, Colleen, Are we talking metric or imperial, metaphysical or actual? I suppose I can type as well as anyone, as for the content, that's for the rest of you to judge but it's very nice to be here, just hanging out as one might say, like a vulture at the kill... |

Nick, welcome back! We all might as well have fun while we're here. The clown, the damsel, the dog, the latent waiter, the enigma. Five dolls trapped at the bottom of a barrel, as in the classic Twilight Zone episode. There would have been a sixth, but the Swiss Goatherd (either blessed or cursed with instinctive climbing skills) negotiated the slippery wall just prior to his plummet to the sidewalk. Will a charitable passerby toss Brendan back into the mix? Where is Rod Serling when we need him? Stay tuned... |

"Geezenstacks - are they the Frederic Brown Geezenstacks?" Yep. He's another one on my list to read more of chance permitting. So far, I've only read maybe a handful of stories by him, though. On a side note, at least in reference to myself, I prefer the term "action figure" rather than "doll." |

Nick Jackson
| | Posted on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 05:22 am: | |
Well, I think "action figure" and "doll" are both a bit too plasticy for my taste. I consider myself to be a living, breathing entity who, though not entirely gifted with free will, at least has the illusion of it. Or, is even this a pathetic delusion? Colleen, much as you deserve the prize with those charming little peals of laughter, I predict it will be snatched from your grasp. Thanks, Des, I'm thoroughly enjoyed this thread. |

"Well, I think "action figure" and "doll" are both a bit too plasticy for my taste. I consider myself to be a living, breathing entity who, though not entirely gifted with free will, at least has the illusion of it. Or, is even this a pathetic delusion?" It's not a pathetic delusion but a necessary delusion to keep us from going entirely insane. All of us dolls, action figures, dummies, and puppets are nothing but play things to forces we can't fathom. Shakespeare said it well. "Like flies to wanton boys are we to the gods / They kill us for their sport." Shakespeare had it slightly wrong, though, living in the misogynistic times he did. Corrected to match modern insights, the quote should read, "Like dolls to pampered girls are we to the goddesses / Their brothers rip our heads off for their sport." Merry Christmas in July! |

I have won my enlightenment; I have won my _Zencore_. Yet like the Buddha unwilling to abandon the Earth to pain and suffering, I shall return to this thread and spread my wisdom to those who are receptive to it. I shall show Swen that there is much honor in timely waitering. I shall lead Phil out of the dollhouse into a larger world he never imagined, a world where heads aren't ripped off for sport by wanton brothers. I shall teach Colleen that there are other kinds of laughter to appreciate than just, "Hehehehe." Mostly, though, in the long tradition of American sportmanship, I shall gloat. |

No. Try "Hehoha hehoha hehoha. That might even be better than "Om Many Padme hum." My weekend was great because Shark Week on the Dicovery Channel started last night. An entire week of great whites, tigers sharks, bull sharks, and other assorted nightmares of the sea swimming through my mind, their dorsal fins cutting the surface of the white like the lives they are destined to cut short later in the program. I love shark week! It's the only time that the tornado dreams go away. One of these days, I'm going to have to try shark fin soup. |

"I just can't figure out why anyone would want to swim with a Great White!!!" 1. Bragging rights. 2. They need some angle to make their documentary stand out from the others. The next step? Nude swimming with great whites. Mark my words. 3. The thrill of it like sky diving. 4. An unconscious desire to commit suicide in a spectacular manner. 5. To help the image of great whites by showing us that, gee, they're really not that dangerous because you can swim with them outside the cage. It may have backfired, though, when on the show you're talking about, I think, they had to leave the water in a hurry when that shark started getting a little aggressive. 6. They don't want to lose a bet or a dare, especially a double dare. 7. Insanity. |

Tonight I started reading _Zencore_, and it has already brought a little magic or at least surrealism into my life. This evening, I watched _Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman_. On tonight's episode, our fearless hero Andrew visits Viet Nam where he eats a number of unusual items. I couldn't help thinking how odd it was that out of the many exotic foods Viet Nam has to offer, our hero indulged himself with snails at least three times, maybe more, when he only had raw snake heart and bull penis once. What's with all of the snails when I could be watching him eat more scorpions and silk worm grubs which were also on the menu? It was a strange, sad episode to think that Andrew Zimmern was losing his iron stomach, forcing him to pad out the episode with snails which don't seem that bizarre to me. Needing to clear myself of the snail sorrow -- Andrew, how could you eat and eat and eat something so tame? --, I picked up my copy of _Zencore_ and read the first story. It was quite good and it was all about eating snails. I can't say that my mind is any clearer, but I can say that my faith in Andrew Zimmern's stomach has been restored because eating snails now seems bizarre to me. |

"Yes, ZENCORE is the new I CHING for fiction lovers (as long as you read the stories in the order printed)." What happens when you finish reading it? Does the world end? How does _Zencore_ relate to the Mayan calander and the Book of Revelation? I'm almost afraid to read more, but I can't stop. |
