summer 2006 I co-edit the World Fantasy Award winning anthology series The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror (St. Martin's Press) with Kelly Link & Gavin Grant. We are now reading for the 20th volume, which will include all material published in the year 2006. I am looking for stories from all branches of horror: from the traditional-supernatural to the borderline, including high-tech science fiction horror, psychological horror, or anything else that might qualify. If in doubt, send it. This is a reprint anthology so I am only reading material published in or about to be published during the year 2006. Submission deadline for stories is December 15th 2006. Anything sent after this deadline will reach me too late. If a magazine, anthology, or collection you’re in or you edit is coming out by December 31st 2006 you can send me galleys or manuscripts so that I can judge the stories in time. No email submissions. I strongly suggest that authors check with their publishers that they are sending review copies out to me as I don’t have time or energy to nag publishers to get me material. I request it once (maybe twice) and that’s it. There are summations of "the year in horror," and "the year in fantasy" in the front of each volume. These include novels we've read and liked, nonfiction, art books, and in my section, "odds and ends"-- material that doesn't fit anywhere else but that I feel might interest the horror reader. But I have to be aware of this material in order to mention it. The deadline for this section is January 30th, 2006. When sending me material please put YEAR'S BEST HORROR on the envelope. Ellen Datlow PMB 391 511 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10011-8436 Kelly Link & Gavin Grant 176 Prospect Avenue Northampton, MA 01060 Kelly & Gavin cover fantasy and I cover horror. If you consider something both, send a copy to each of us. We do not confer on our choices. ****I do not want to receive manuscripts from authors of stories from venues that it’s likely I already receive regularly (like Interzone, Black Static, Cemetery Dance, Subterranean, Postscripts, Weird Tales, F&SF, the Dell Mystery and sf magazines etc) or from anthologies and collections, unless I don't have or can’t get that anthology or collection. And please do not send a SASE. If I choose a story you will be informed. If you want to confirm that I‘ve received something, enclose a self-addressed-stamped postcard and I will let you know the date it arrived. For stories that appear on the web, please send me (or have the publisher send me) print-outs of your story. |

I would specifically like to call for print-outs of stories from the Australian website Shadowed Realms as I will not read the stories online in the past have not been sent the stories by the publishers and therefore missed at least one in 2005 that I read in reprint and would have put on my HM list. Thanks. |

Not quite ready. I'm still agonizing about the last 25,000 words from my half :-) Soon. Kelly and Gavin sent in the fantasy half before leaving for Australia but until I get the ok from our packager (that he can get all their choices) I can't post it. |

I'm hoping to post the horror TOC before I leave for London tomorrow evening, but am waiting to hear back from one last contributor who I contacted this evening before doing so. |

Yes, I've heard we're in for a spot of snow. I'd heard late evening, but now I'm hearing rush hour. Fingers crossed. |

Sheesh! That's a shame. I recall, I think, picking the book up in July, some years. Last year I didn't see it until late August. |

Michael, It's so big and has so many components that it's easy to miss the deadline. I'm hoping I, at least can move faster this year-- by reminding everyone that I MUST receive anything to be considered by December 31st or I just won't look at it. |

I received my copy of the arc today and am pretty unhappy with the back cover copy (which blessedly will NOT be on the actual book). It uses the same crappy arc copy they used last year, which ended up on amazon ( and is still there, dammit!) "The legendary anthology is back, with witches and warlocks, fairy rings and gothic tales. The Years Best Fantasy and Horror 2007 presents the best short stories and poetry published in this genre. Culled from thousands of annuals, acclaimed writers and genre specialists Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link and Gavin Grant offer a broad range of fantastical and horrific fiction.." etc and it calls Kelly's collection a "novel." aighhhh. Just shoot me now. |

I got my first "author" copies today--five hc and five pb. I could only carry one bag (the hc) home so I don't know how the pb looks but the hc looks good. All the contributor names are on the back cover and there are photos of me, Kelly, and Gavin on the inside flap. The book is officially published October 2nd and ships the 4th. Halleluja! |
