Here’s the full list—see the prior thread about Greatest Fantastical Books of all time re the preamble and context if you’re new to this message board.
One thing I will reiterate: PLEASE, if posting additional recommendations, post them in the form:
Author Last Name, Author First Name, Book Title
If you don’t, I’m just not going to add it to the list. It’s too painful when trying to sort all of these. (Also, don't email me lists--post them here, although the point now is, frankly, to discuss the list we have, not add to it.)
I decided not to divide them out by time period, because in the course of doing so, I probably would have bled from my eyes and ears.
And, oh yes—THERE WILL BE TYPOS. Certain accent marks may be missing. Please concentrate on the substance, not on the trappings. Thanks. Mostly because I just don’t have the time to proofread this properly. I don’t think there will enough mistakes to make anyone worry unduly…probably also some repetitions. It’s very difficult to get Word to compile a list like this properly. Removing duplicates in manually. If I tackled this at any greater length, I’d never get it done.
On the next thread, I am posting an edited version of the list wherein I take off as many recent books, from the last 10 years, that I can identify, any books that I don’t feel are fantasy, and any books I don’t like. Of the remainder, I will asterisk those I have read. I would very much appreciate descriptions/discussion on those books—why should they be there? What makes them superior to other books that could be on the list. If you do not convince me, they shall be gone. – Rotating Meerkat, er, Jeff

One of the greatest novellas ever written, if not the best; seriously powerful and haunting fantasy.
A Fragment Of Life -Arthur Machen
In my view much better than the Machens listed above.
And there is a chapter in THE HOLY SINNER by Thomas Mann that, I believe, is the greatest fantasy ever written anywhere.

Notes on a list that makes me feel like an inadequate reader (no additions, but some substitutions or subtractions).
For a number of authors, there seem to be redundancies when listing specific collections vs. collected stories. I don't have the TOCs of all of them, but here are a few suggestions:
Aickman--Collected Strange Stories and Wine Dark Sea both cull tales from other collections, including Cold Dark Hand In Mine.
Bradbury--I believe the whole of October Country is included in Collected Stories
Ellison--Collected vs. Essential
Leiber--Nights Black Agents would all be in Collected Stories
Wolfe--do the stories in Strange Travellers post-date the Collected?
Huysmans--A Rebours and Against the Grain are the same book, aren't they?
Substitutions:
Carroll, Jonathan--this may just be a matter of taste and time, but I thought The Wooden Sea was one of Carroll's weaker efforts. I'd replace it with Outside the Dog Museum or Voice of Our Shadow (both of which are also more than 10 years old).
DiFilippo--I would place the collection Lost Pages above A Year in the Linear City, or at least on equal footing, and AYITLC will undoubtedly appear in a meatier collection shortly. Of course, both are younger than 10.
Heller--God Knows and Picture This have much stronger fantastical elements than Catch-22, which seems to me realistic satire (brilliant as it may be).
Joyce, Graham--Both Indigo and Smoking Poppy seem to me superior to Requiem, though they may be too new.
Shiel--I view The Purple Cloud as superior to Shapes in the Fir.
Smith, C. A.--rather than singling out the Zothique tales, I'd suggest two volumes: Collected Stories and Collected Fantastic Poetry (the latter actually a recent collection from Hippocampus Press).
Removals:
Bronte--Wuthering Heights, which I don't find fantastical or even all that fantastic a book.
Nabokov--Lolita, though it's likely my favorite novel of all time, really doesn't strike me as containing any fantastical elements.
Just hoping to shorten the list before additions start to flood in, and I'm sure many better-read people than I will disagree with some of my replacements. Now to start looking for the one's I've not read....

I still think Yoshikawa's MUSASHI should be removed; don't think it resembles fantasy in any meaningful way.
Murakami's BIRD CHRONICLE is not fantasy, either (IMO).
Flannery O'Connor seems a stretch, fantasy-wise.
Seems to me we should try to narrow this down to one book per author, as difficult as that may be. I mean, do we really need all this Brautigan? ;-)

Amado, Jorge is on the list (via Rhys) without a title. Any recommendations?
Michael Cisco mentioned Jansson, Tove and Martins, Floriano each without a title. Anybody got one?
Vukevich, Ray got a mention from Jonathan Briggs (not sure if he was nominating him for the list or not). Any clarification and a title would be helpful.
Just FYI, I'm trying to figure out how to put this thing up on a website. More news later...

Two corrections:

They are both the same book. The Thousand Nights and One Night was the original title, but it's often just called 1001 Nights or Arabian Nights.
Pullman, Phillip His Dark Materials Trilogy
This is the 3 Pullman books already listed. You could either list all three, or list this, but having both is redudant.

Unless I am greatly mistaken (always possible at this late hour) Tove Jansson wrote the Moomintroll books, which are a series for children set in a curious world peopled by small troll-like beings and mushroom-like ghosts. I was obsessed by these as a child and re-read them some years later to discover that they had lost nothing in the intervening years. They are great books. She lived on a small Finnish island and died last year. |

Just to be a pain, I'm going to recommend someone else - the British writer Joan Aiken. I didn't see her on the lists above, but maye she's been mentioned elsewhere.
When I look back at the people who influenced me, I tend to look no further than my teens, for some reason and quote Vance et al, but actually, it's a lot further back, with writers like Susan Cooper, L M Boston and Aiken herself. She wrote a whole series set in an alternate historical England and the east coast of America. Some very strange descriptions of London, I recall. |

Thanks for all of the corrections (and additions, Liz)! As I told Jeff, I'm ashamed to admit just how few of these I've read.
Further evidence for those who are already questioning my sanity. I've actually got a sheet set up to "score" the books. Positive mentions get 1pt, negative or "not fantasy" gets -1, "ehh, maybe" gets a .5. Not exactly scientific, but it does yield some interesting facts:
Top Book (so far) - The Physiognomy, Jeff Ford (5pts)
Close Second - Viriconium, M. John Harrison (4.5pts)*
Least Worthy (mostly becuase of "not fantasy" votes) - The Maias and The Sin of Father Amaro, Eca (-4pts)
*For purposes of the list, I consolidated all of the votes for In Viriconium and Viriconium Nights into one entry, Viriconium.

Wow, you got all those books in one trip? It usually takes me a few months to get that many books.
I just checked, my library does have Star of the Unborn. Cool (amazon can't find any listings for it).
Here's something for the Fighting Philosopher, if he's feeling ambitious. Instead of just calculating how many people mention a book, want to try setting up a web page for this list, and letting people rate the books? I think it would take a good deal of work, but it might be fun to see the results (at least until the fandom of some author start skewing the votes). |

I'd like to add another title to the two William Morris books already listed. THE WELL AT THE WORLD'S END is almost certainly his best book.
And Italo Calvino's story collection NUMBERS IN THE DARK should be there too, because it provides a full overview (both good and bad) of his entire short fiction career. |

I'd like to add the works of Steve Katz, particularly Stolen Stories, Wier and Pouce, and The Lestriad. Fantastically funny and written in dazzling American language. Also The Iguana by Anna Maria Ortese, a kind of revision of The Tempest, with an animal protagonist. And Leonora Carrington's The Hearing Trumpet, a wacky and joyful apocalyptic tale with very energetic old ladies as protagonists. |
