Should I be concerned that I have not yet begun receiving my subscription? It was supposed to start with the February issue. It has been just about 8 weeks, so we're still under the "make-a-stink" deadline, but if the March issue is already out...

Well, I have this issue now. I feel sort of folded away in your files while commenting on it.
The only thing I've heard previously of this realm, Shambhala, is the song that's been on the radio many years that says "How does the light shine in the halls of Shambala?" I thought this story might cast some on it, but find it's written in that directorial ongoing-present and also that it will bring the cover into play; I'll look at the story again at a later time.
Looking at the back cover flipped me out. Burt Libe re-emerges from wherever he went to, doing what are apparently children's books about time travel. Burt used to telephone me up demanding free copies of my fanzine.
Saul Steinberg-like effect on the Joseph Farris cartoon.
I don't regard this as an outstanding issue. The stories seem too typical of what's being written nowadays, this time around. |

This was the issue that hit the jackpot, at least for me. I liked every story this issue. "The Revivalist" by Cowdrey was my favorite. It took the Rip Van Winkle idea, but told it from a science fiction perspective with big helpings of horror and humor. A real achievement.
Next I liked Shultz's "The Capacity to Appear Mindless," which was not only funny but raised some serious issues and had a compelling plot. "Czesko" by Ef Deal was also quite funny and led to the perfect conclusion. "Intolerance" by Robert Reed was not funny. It grabbed me from the opening scene and pulled me along through all the twists and turns. "Shambhala" by Irvine was a good look at a high-tech catastrophe, while Morressy's "True History of the Picky Princess" was a good, unpretentious revision of Sleeping Beauty. Finally, "From the Mouths of Babes" was an effective story as well.
A superlative issue. |

Yeah! I have yet to read the Irvine or Shultz stories, but I've either liked or loved everything else in the issue so far. I also thought Kilheffer's column was particularly good (even if I thought the Bujold better than her past two fantasies), and Kathy Maio's column was a good read too. Issues like this one always make me glad I'm a subscriber.

Great issue. Every story was either very good or excellent. I especially loved the Reed, Hergenrader, Irvine, and Deal pieces. The Schultz was funny in a vicious way, and the Morressy in a fantasy-lite way. But the yarn ripper of the issue was definitely the Cowdrey. I agree with Laird, the man's writing is getting stronger. Reading the March "F&SF" made a gloomy Sunday sheer fun. |

My March issue arrived in the mail today.
I sat down, opened up the issue and just finished reading "Shambhala" by Alex Irvine. I read it from start to finish without stopping, and that is the best praise I can give any story. I really enjoyed it from start to finish, and especially liked the ending and the use of Greek mythology. Really great read! |
